Custom IB items design?

In v4 I had a bare understanding of editing bitmaps and loading them in the layout editor or load custom faders or what have you uploaded from other people, but in v5 I cannot see how to load custom IB elements at all except for what I save from the layout editor.
How do I do this ? I want to build some custom faders that look more like console faders...

normally ie with a fader, open edit layout, clic "back bitmap" choose your n frames image, then set "number of frames" to n,
choose vertical/horizontal and it's ok no?
